Privacy Policy
Aurora Tracker & Forecast helps you see whether the aurora may be visible at your location. We built it to collect as little as possible. This policy explains what the app accesses and where it goes.
What the app accesses
Your location (only with your permission). The app reads your device's latitude and longitude to work out the aurora forecast for where you are. If you deny or revoke location permission, that feature can't function, but the app otherwise remains usable.
We do not ask for or collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, or any account credentials. The app has no user accounts. We do not use an advertising identifier (the current version shows no ads).
How your location is used
- Your coordinates are sent to our backend API (
aurora-api.xgk.app) with each request so it can return the space-weather and cloud data for that spot. - They are used only to answer that request. We do not build a profile of you or track your movements over time.
- Cloud-cover lookups are made on a coarse (~55 km) grid, not your exact point.
- As with any internet service, our hosting provider may briefly retain standard request metadata (such as IP address) in server logs for security and reliability. We do not use this to identify you.
Data stored on your device
- Cached forecast/conditions (a local database) so the app works offline and loads quickly.
- An access key for our backend, kept in the operating system's secure storage.
This data stays on your device. Uninstalling the app removes it.
Third-party services
To produce the forecast, our backend retrieves data from:
- NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center — space-weather data.
- Open-Meteo — cloud cover (on a coarse grid).
- Cloudflare — hosts our backend and serves your requests.
The app does not send your data directly to these services; it talks only to our backend, which fetches public data on your behalf.
Children
Aurora Tracker & Forecast is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Your choices
- You can grant or revoke location permission at any time in your operating system's privacy settings.
- All network traffic uses HTTPS.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the effective date above and post the new version on this page.
